The tree looks ancient because it is patient: arms raised, bark rough, silhouette impossible to mistake. But young trees need conditions older trees survived under. At lower, warmer elevations, fewer seedlings are sprouting, growing, and surviving. The adult remains in photographs. The next generation is the quieter question.
