Before personal phones, one number belonged to an entire home.

It rang in the kitchen, and anyone might answer. It required presence — someone had to be home, or you'd miss the call. Voicemail was a machine with a tape. The landline has largely left residential life, replaced by a device for each person. What was once shared is now individual.
